When you place something on your lips for 6 to 8 hours every night, you should know what it contains.
Mouth tape sits against delicate skin and close to the airway. It is used repeatedly, overnight, often for months or years. That makes material quality and safety testing especially important.
At Betta Sleep, we chose to independently test our mouth tape so customers and retail partners can feel confident in what they are using.
What we tested for
Our mouth tape was independently lab tested across three key areas:
- Bisphenols (including BPA and related compounds)
- Phthalates and plasticisers (a broad screening panel)
- Heavy metals (common screening metals)
This testing is designed to confirm the product meets a higher standard of material safety for repeated overnight use.
1) Bisphenols (BPA, BPS, BPF)
Bisphenols such as BPA, BPS and BPF are chemicals sometimes associated with plastics and resins.
Because mouth tape includes adhesive and polymer-based materials, we believe it is important to confirm bisphenols are not present at measurable levels.
Our test results:
- BPA: Not detected
- BPS: Not detected
- BPF: Not detected
In plain English: these compounds were not detected at the lab’s measurable threshold.
2) Phthalates and plasticisers
Phthalates are a group of chemicals sometimes used to soften plastics. Depending on materials and supply chain controls, they can occasionally appear in polymer-based products or adhesives.
We screened our mouth tape across a wide panel of commonly tested phthalates and related plasticisers.
What the results showed:
- The majority of tested compounds were not detected.
- A small number were detected at trace parts-per-billion (ppb) levels.
Parts per billion are extremely small quantities. Trace detections can occur even in well-controlled manufacturing environments, which is exactly why testing matters.
Key point: Testing confirms what is present and at what level, instead of relying on assumptions.
3) Heavy metals
We also tested for common heavy metals typically screened in product safety programs, including:
- Arsenic
- Cadmium
- Lead
- Mercury
Result summary: all heavy metals tested were well below the lab’s listed limits.
Heavy metals are not expected in high-quality materials, but we believe verifying that is part of doing this properly.
Why this matters more for mouth tape than most products
Mouth tape is different from many consumer products because it is:
- Used repeatedly (often nightly)
- Worn for long periods (6 to 8 hours at a time)
- Placed near the airway
- Used long term (months or years)
That combination makes material quality and safety testing far more important than it would be for a product used briefly or occasionally.
Our approach to quality
Betta Sleep Mouth Tape was developed to balance:
- Comfort
- Breathability
- Reliable hold through the night
- Gentle removal
- Skin friendliness
Independent lab testing is part of that same mindset: build it properly, then verify it.
Transparency note
Lab testing does not mean a product is “chemical-free.” Everything is made of chemicals. What matters is what is present, at what level, and whether it is within acceptable safety parameters.
That is why we test.
