Our Founders Journey
My Struggle with Snoring and Its Impact on My Life
Four years ago, I was grappling with a problem that many can relate to: I was a terrible snorer. My snoring was so disruptive that my partner often kicked me out of the bedroom…
It was not only affecting my sleep but also putting a strain on our relationship. Desperate for a solution, I tried everything I could think of.
The Turning Point: Discovering James Nestor's "Breath"
Sleeping on my side worked for a few years, but as I got older, the snoring persisted no matter how I slept. Then, during a summer holiday at our beach house, I stumbled upon a book my sister was reading called “Breath” by James Nestor. We all found it fascinating and passed it around the family. One chapter, in particular, caught my attention—it talked about taping your mouth shut at night to improve breathing.
Experimenting with Tapes: A Journey of Trial and Error
At first, the idea of taping my mouth shut sounded drastic, but I was willing to try anything. With only sellotape at hand, I taped my mouth shut for the first night.
I managed to keep it on for about an hour before taking it off, but during that time, my partner noticed that I wasn’t snoring. Encouraged by this small success, I began experimenting with different types of tape.
I tried duct tape, 3M Nexcare tape, and every other tape I could find. I would start by taping just the center of my mouth, but eventually, I needed to tape the sides as well, covering my mouth with multiple strips.
“Mouth taping tip 1: It’s very common for mouth tape users or sleep devices to not make it through the first night..You may only manage to keep it on for 5 or 10 minutes, an hour, or maybe even all night. But trust me, it’s worth persevering.”
Developing Betta Sleep: A Solution to Uncomfortable Tapes
During my trials, all of the tapes I experimented with were uncomfortable—they didn’t stretch, weren’t breathable, and the adhesive was harsh on the skin around my mouth. Mornings were torturous; removing the tape made me wince with pain. I knew there had to be a better solution.
That’s when I realised that someone needed to create a product specifically designed for this purpose. Despite being busy with my other company, I felt compelled to develop a solution. I dove into research, ordering every type of fabric I could think of. After about 12 months of trial and error, I finally developed the product that became Betta Sleep Mouth Tape.
Getting Started with Betta Sleep: What to Expect
If you’re new to using Betta Sleep, your first night might feel a bit odd. You may only manage to keep it on for 5 or 10 minutes, an hour, or maybe even all night. But trust me, it’s worth persevering. Unlike my initial experiences with regular tapes, Betta Sleep is designed to be comfortable and effective from the start.
Tips for Removing Betta Sleep Mouth Tape Easily
One thing I’ve learned is that as the adhesive stays on your skin overnight, it becomes stickier. To remove it easily in the morning, simply poke your tongue out into the adhesive. Your saliva will neutralize the stickiness, allowing you to peel it off without discomfort. This technique works even if you have facial hair.
If you wake up during the night and need a drink, you can peel off half or all of the tape and then reapply it. The adhesive might feel less sticky at first, but after a few minutes, it will adhere nicely again. If you feel a bit constricted, you can create a small gap by pushing your tongue against the tape, loosening it slightly for added comfort.
How Betta Sleep Has Improved My Quality of Sleep
Since using Betta Sleep, my quality of sleep has improved dramatically. I no longer drool or wake up needing water, and I greet each morning with a fresh mouth instead of one that feels dry and uncomfortable. While the tape can be reused if you wish, I recommend using a new strip each night for the best experience.
Why Betta Sleep Is Different from Other Mouth Tapes
What sets Betta Sleep apart is its amazing stretch and breathability. It comfortably molds to your mouth, allowing natural movement of your lips while ensuring they stay closed. You can breathe through it—it’s slightly constricted but breathable—which is something other tapes don’t offer. Products like 3M Nexcare tape aren’t breathable and can be very uncomfortable.
Final Thoughts: Helping Others Achieve Restful Sleep
Creating Betta Sleep has been a journey, but knowing it can help others struggling with snoring makes it all worthwhile. I hope that by sharing my story, I can help others achieve the restful, peaceful sleep they deserve.
Best practice tips for using Mouth Tape:
Difficulty Removing the Tape in the Morning
- Solution: Gently use your tongue to push through the tape from the inside. Saliva from your tongue will help dissolve the adhesive, making it easier to remove the tape without discomfort. Once loosened, carefully peel off the remaining tape.
Needing a Drink During the Night
- Solution: If you wake up thirsty, you can partially or fully remove the tape to have a drink. Afterward, reapply the tape to continue enjoying its benefits. The adhesive is designed to remain effective even after reapplication.
Feeling Panicked or Uncomfortable
-
Solution: Should you wake up feeling uneasy with the tape on, you can create a small gap without removing it entirely. Stick your tongue out and downward to detach the tape from your bottom lip, allowing you to breathe through your mouth if needed. Once you feel comfortable again, you can choose to reapply the tape or leave it as is for the rest of the night.
